Obituary of Lorant Schacht

Lorant (Lolo) Schacht, 85, long time resident of Leonia, New Jersey passed away in Kingston, New York on September 19, 2017. Lolo survived the Holocaust in Budapest, Hungary after being orphaned when his parents, Marcel and Serena Schacht (nee Burkovitz) perished in the gas chambers at Auschwitz in 1944.

Lolo survived alone on the streets of Budapest enduring the hardships of life in the Jewish ghettos during the World War II. He became a refugee during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 where he was brought to Stockholm, Sweden. It was in Stockholm in 1961 where Lolo met his Bride-to- be, Marie-Louise Andreasson at the Ambassador Night Club. Lolo told his friends that night he would marry that beautiful girl.

On December 8, 1962, Lolo and Marie-Louise were married and have spent 55 years together. They came to America in 1965 residing in Rego Park, Queens. Lolo was a Salesman for the Star Office Supply Company from 1966 until his retirement in 2007. The couple had a son, Marcel Schacht in 1968. The family moved to Leonia in 1974 where they lived for 20 years. Marcel became a United States Marine in 1987 serving in Operation Desert Storm. He later went on to serve New Jersey as a Bergen County Police Officer. Lolo is survived by his wife Marie Louise, his son Marcel and his partner Heather, two grandchildren Brandon and Hailey.

A 10 a.m. funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 20, at the Eden Memorial Chapel, 327 Main Street, Fort Lee, NJ. Interment will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery, 685 Fairview Avenue, Fairview, NJ. Shiva will be held at the home of Marcel Schacht and Heather Gray, 28 Clark Street, Cresskill, NJ starting at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, September 23 and continuing through Sunday, September 24 at 6:45 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to The Survivor Mitzvah Project, www.survivormitzvah.org.
