Jewish Charitable Burial Society

The Jewish Charitable Burial Society (JCBS) exists to ensure that burial permits for loved ones on fraternal grounds are issued promptly. As the custodian of burial maps for numerous fraternal and religious organizations, JCBS plays a vital role in preserving access to these burial grounds.

Many years ago, synagogues and fraternal organizations, such as the Knights of Pythias, purchased large sections of graves in various cemeteries. These plots were offered to members as a fraternal benefit or at a discounted rate. Dedicated members or secretaries within these organizations once oversaw the use of these graves, ensuring they were available when needed.

Over time, as membership declined and many of these organizations ceased to exist, the responsibility of managing these burial records became uncertain. To preserve their intended purpose, JCBS has stepped in to safeguard cemetery maps and ensure burial permits are issued efficiently.

Below is a list of the societies we represent and their respective cemetery locations.
